Research Profile

In October 2002, Down was elected to the post of IDSA Education Committee Chair, the highest elected education office in the Society. Among his recent accomplishments are obtaining a research grant from a subsidiary of Coachmen Industries in 2001-02, receiving the Kaneb Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000 and serving as Midwest District Education Chair for the IDSA from 1997-1999. As an industrial design professional, Down has received many patents for work in the automotive aftermarket, consumer product and marine industries. In 1986 Down co-founded Prodesign Inc., an Indiana company that designs and manufactures thermoformed products. His 1987 design of the first commercially produced jet-driven human-powered watercraft, Jet Wave, was featured on the cover of gift specialist extraordinaire Hammacher Schlemmer's Spring Catalogue. General Motors, Ford, Monsanto Plastics and Stewart Superior, have also featured Down's designs in promotional publications and at international trade shows.
