Research Profile

Research and teaching areas of interest include financial crises and instability, Federal Reserve and macroeconomic policy, globalization, political economy, institutional change, Social Security, local economic development, and the effects of the economy on the welfare of working people. Prior to coming to Notre Dame in 1989, Wolfson was an economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C., where he investigated issues connected to monetary policy and the safety and soundness of the banking system. His major publications include the book, Financial Crises: Understanding the Postwar U.S. Experience (currently in its second edition and translated into Japanese), as well as journal articles on subjects such as international financial crises, the stock market, the Federal Reserve, debt deflation, credit rationing, federal budget policy, the New Economy, neoliberalism, and institutional methodology.
