Research Profile
Johnson's research interests are in the origins and development of early Christian Liturgy and in the history and theology of the rites of Christian initiation. His 1999 book, The Rites of Christian Initiation: Their Evolution and Interpretation (Pueblo), widely used in schools of theology and seminaries in the United States, was chosen by Alcuin Club, England, as their 1999 selection. The author/editor of several books, including The Prayers of Sarapion of Thmuis in the OCA series (Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome), and over 50 articles in scholarly publications, recent publications include Images of Baptism (LTP, 2001); Between Memory and Hope: Readings on the Liturgical Year (Pueblo, 2000); as co-author, The Apostolic Tradition, A Commentary, Hermeneia Commentary Series (Fortress, 2002); and The Virgin of Guadalupe: Theological Reflections of an Anglo-Lutheran Liturgist (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002). He is also an editorial consultant for Worship, and a member of The North American Academy of Liturgy and Societas Liturgica.
