Research Profile
Professor Hallinan's primary research interest is the effects of the formal and informal organization of schools on students' cognitive and social development. Her present research is an analysis of sector effects on student achievement. She served as president of the American Sociological Association in 1995-96, president of the Sociological Research Association in 2000, elected to the National Academy of Education in 1999, and was Vice President for Fellows in 2001-03. Professor Hallinan also served as editor of Sociology of Education from 1981-1986. In 2004, she received the Willard Waller Award from the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association for a distinguished career in Sociology of Education. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Lambda Theta, and the Laureate Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. She received Notre Dame's Presidential Award Citation in 1997, the Research Achievement Award in 2003, the Faculty Award in 2006, and the Excellence in Research on Catholic Education Award in 2007.
