Research Profile
Guo's areas of interest are Arabic language and literature, medieval Arabic historiography and popular culture. His first book, Early Mamluk Syrian Historiography: Al-Yunini's Dhayl Mir'at al-zaman (Brill, 1998), is a source-critical study of historical writings in Damascus during the fourteenth century. Guo's next book, Commerce, Culture, and Community in a Red Sea Port in the Thirteenth Century: The Arabic documents of Quseir, has been published by Brill (2004). He is currently working on a book-length project, "Ibn Daniyal, A Medieval Muslim Entertainer and His World," for which he was awarded an NEH fellowship (2008-2009). At Notre Dame, he has taught Arabic language, "The Arabian Nights and World Literature" (University Literature Seminar), "Love, Death, and Exile in Arabic Literature," "Introduction to Islamic Civilization," and the Core Course.
