Research Profile

Liangyan Ge has published in the areas of Chinese fiction and China-West cultural relations. His book Out of the Margins: The Rise of Chinese Vernacular Fiction (University of Hawaii Press, 2001), discusses the orality-writing dynamics in pre-modern China that led to the vernacularization of Chinese narrative literature. Currently, he is working on a book project about the impact of the pre-modern Chinese system of the civil service examinations on the development of vernacular fiction. Ge is co-author of Integrated Chinese, a language textbook series.
