Research Profile
Turner studies the development and change of students’ motivation to learn in classroom contexts. She is particularly interested in how teacher-student relationships and instructional discourse are related to student motivation and learning in mathematics classes. She is currently conducting an intervention with teachers focused on principles of motivation and instructional strategies and changes in student engagement and learning. Turner has published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, Educational Psychologist, Elementary School Journal, Advances in Motivation and Achievement, Teachers College Record, and Reading Research Quarterly. With Nancy Perry, she authored the chapter on "The Role of Classroom Contexts in Motivation" in the Handbook of Educational Psychology. Turner was awarded the Best Dissertation award by the International Reading Association. She received a multi year grant from the Spencer Foundation to study students’ avoidance behaviors in mathematics across the transition to middle school
