Research Profile
Smith conducts research on the ways globalization impacts politics. She has two new books on contemporary social movements for global justice, Social Movements for Global Democracy and (with multiple colleagues) Global Democracy and the World Social Forums. Smith has co-edited three other books on transnational social movements: Transnational Social Movements and Global Politics: Solidarity Beyond the State (Syracuse University Press, 1997), Globalization and Resistance: Transnational Dimensions of Social Movements (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002), and Coalitions Across Borders: Transnational Protest and the Neoliberal Order (Rowman & Littlefield, 2005). She has published more than 45 articles in books and journals such as The American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Mobilization, Human Rights Quarterly, International Sociology, Journal of World Systems Research, and NonProfit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the World Society Foundation, the Aspen Institute, and others.
