Research Profile

Duffy's area of expertise is the historical development of literacy and rhetoric in cross-cultural contexts. He is co-editor of The Rhetoric of Everyday Life (University of Wisconsin Press, 2003) and has written a book, Writing from These Roots: The Historical Development of Literacy in a Hmong-American Community (University of Hawaii Press, 2007), documenting the literacy development of Hmong refugees from Laos. Duffy teaches courses on literacy, rhetoric, and literature, and serves as the Francis O'Malley Director of the University Writing Program. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship.
