James O. Bellis
Associate Professor
Department of Anthropology
Degrees
B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Indiana University
Research Profile
Bellis was the fourth anthropologist in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the first archaeologist in that group. In his first decade he was to start the University of Notre Dame archaeological field school which conducted a variety of excavation programs in Indiana, Michigan and Illinois from 1972 through 1976. This field school was to provide the first opportunity for undergraduate students to become regularly involved in original research and field work. Though the program was not able to operate every year from its inception on a regular annual basis, it is presently in its 11th consecutive year. During the summer of 2001, students participated in fieldwork with Notre Dame archaeologists in Indiana, California, Israel and Jordan. In 1984, the College of Arts and Letters honored Bellis with the Father Sheedy Award for excellence in teaching. In 1998, he was honored with the Kaneb Award.
