Research Profile

Ashley's scholarly interests include political and liberation theology, Christian spirituality, and theology and science. In the first area he has published, Interruptions: Mysticism, Politics and Theology in the Work of Johann Baptist Metz (1998), which builds on his editing and/or translating of three books by this German political theologian. He is the book review editor for Spiritus: a Journal of Christian Spirituality. As Visiting Scholar at the Boston College Center for Ignatian spirituality (1997-98), Ashley began researching a book on the impact of Ignatian spirituality on three 20th-century Jesuit theologians. He has published articles on Christian spirituality in Theological Studies, The Way, and La Revista Latinoamericana de Teología, among others. Supported by a grant from the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, he is currently on leave while exploring the relationship between theology and science seen from the perspective of the option for the poor.
