Research Profile

Joan Aldous is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology. Her areas include family sociology, gender, work and families. She is the author of over 50 published articles as well as two books, and is the editor or co-editor of three other books. Professor Aldous is currently working on research having to do with factors that contribute to individuals volunteering over a period of time. She is using a sample of Notre Dame graduates, some of whom had taken courses while at the University requiring their volunteering to determine if, 22 years later, they are still volunteering. She looked at factors that encourage or discourage volunteering when busy with families and occupations. The Atlantic Philanthropic Society funded this research. Professor Aldous has submitted two articles based on her research. One has to do with the factors that contribute to individuals volunteering over a period of time. The paper based on this study is being submitted to the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. She is also studying using a sample drawn from the Health and Retirement Survey, the perceived health and wellbeing of individuals 50-70 years old. This paper she is submitting to the Journal of Research on Aging.
