Department of Psychology
Degrees
B.A., Johns Hopkins University; M.A., Ph.D., UCLA
Research Profile
Cummings's research interests concern children, marriages and families. He has especially focused on the effects of everyday forms of marital conflict on children's functioning and adjustment, including understanding how parents might better handle their everyday differences for the sake of their marriage, and the sake of their children. Recent authored books include Children and Marital Conflict (1994) and Developmental Psychopathology and Family Process: Theory, Research, and Clinical Implications (2000). Long-term goals include a general model towards a more comprehensive understanding of children's development in families and the development of more effective prevention and parent-education programs to foster happier and healthier children, marriages and families.
