Research Profile

Beatty works in the fields of Latin American, Mexican, and economic history. His areas of interest include comparative industrialization, the study of institutions and their effect on economic activity, and the history of technology. His book, Institutions and Investment: The Political Basis of Industrialization in Mexico before 1911 (Stanford, 2001), examines the relationship between political institutions and the early stages of Mexico's economic transformation between 1880 and 1911. His current project examines the origins and determinants of technological change in late nineteenth century Mexico, including technology transfer, the activities of Mexican inventors, imitators and innovators, and the degree to which institutions and societal interaction shaped experiences of technological change.
