Research Profile

 

Carolyn Nordstrom's principal areas of interest are the anthropology of war and peace, illegal economies and power, gender, globalization, and culture theory. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in warzones worldwide, with long term interests in Southern Africa and South Asia. Nordstrom has over five dozen scholarly articles, and her academic books include: Global Outlaws: Crime, Money, and Power in the Contemporary World (2007), Shadows of War: Violence, Power, and International Profiteering in the 21st Century (2004), A Different Kind of War Story (1997), Fieldwork Under Fire: Contemporary Stories of Violence and Survival (1995), The Paths to Domination, Resistance, and Terror (1992). She has recently received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2004 - 2005), John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowhip (2001 - 2002) as well as numerous other grants, including the U.S. Institute for Peace. Nordstrom has received several teaching awards; she is an associate editor for several journal and book series, and lectures worldwide.
