Curtis Franks
Assistant Professor
Department of Philosophy
Degrees
B.A., Rice University; PhD., University of California, Irvine
Research Profile
Franks' philosophical focus is on epistemological questions about the structure of inference and reasoning, the proper characterization of mathematics among the sciences, and the notion of scientific foundations. His mathematical focus is on proof-theory of arithmetics, especially where arithmetical theories are boarderline cases for classical logical phenomena like Goedel's theorems. Currently he's studying the different notions of formalism and finitism advocated by D. Hilbert, J. Herbrand, and others in the 1920s and 1930s.
