Research Profile

Juan is an internationally acclaimed director-playwright. As playwright he is known for expressing issues to the edge. His directorial works are marked by visual poetry, movement, and language in space. He has received international recognition: in France he was knighted Chevalier de l'Ordre National des Arts et Lettres (1985) and Chevalier de l'Ordre National de Merit (2001); in Greece he has been honored with an Alexander Onassis International Award for Theatre, Playwriting (1997); in the Philippines he received the National Award for Achievement in Drama (2003). Juan is the founding Artistic Director of Theatro Aggelon Bima, Athens and on the board of the International Forum of Playwrights of the international Theatre Institute. To continue his service to culturally insularized communities in the Philippines, he has professionalized a community theatre group, Magimo Productions, which also has established a beneficiary day-care/school for indigent and underprivileged children, and holds theatre and communication workshops for public school teachers in the southern islands.
