Research Profile

Before coming to Notre Dame in 1975, Alan Dowty taught for twelve years, and served as Chairman of the Department of International Relations, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has published widely on U.S. foreign policy, weapons of mass destruction, international freedom of movement, and international enforcement; most of his recent work is on the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli politics. Among his six books are The Limits of American Isolation (1971); Middle East Crisis (1984), which won the Quincy Wright Award of the International Studies Association; Closed Borders: The Contemporary Assault on Freedom of Movement (1987), written as a Twentieth Century Fund Report; and The Jewish State: A Century Later (1998, 2001), and Israel/Palestine (2005,2008). He has also published over 130 articles and reviews, and has is a past President of the International Associate for Israel Studies.
