Research Profile
Gillespie's scholarly interests are in Russian and Polish literature, particularly poetry, with a focus on the psychology of creative genius. Her book A Russian Psyche: The Poetic Mind of Marina Tsvetaeva (2001) was honored with a Choice Outstanding Academic Title award. Gillespie is editor of the encyclopedia volume Russian Literature in the Age of Realism (2003) and the author of articles on Tolstoy, Gorky, Pushkin, Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva, Brodsky, Pawlikowska, and Sep-Szarzynski. She has published translations of the poetry of Tsvetaeva, Khodasevich, Fet, Pushkin, and others. Gillespie's current book project entitled Dangerous Verses: Alexander Pushkin and the Ethics of Inspiration addresses themes of crime, conscience, guilt, and subversion that derive from Pushkin's exercise of poetic freedoms in the context of an authoritarian political system. She is also co-editing a collection of articles entitled The Other Pushkiniana: Taboo Texts, Topics, Interpretations that includes contributions from leading Russian and western Pushkin scholars.Contact Information
