Video: English Major Thrives in Marketing Internship

“I’ve definitely learned a lot about the publishing industry and what it’s like to put together a book,” says Meghan Thomassen, a senior English major in Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters.

During the summer of 2013, Thomassen interned at Sheffield Marketing Partners, a boutique agency based in Downers Grove, Illinois, specializing in narrative message development and visual storytelling. She helped the firm’s director edit a book titled Brief, about helping business executives do more by saying less. Whether she finds a career in writing, editing, or “helping authors get their books on shelves,” Thomassen notes that the publishing industry is “rapidly changing and I really would like to be at the forefront of that.”

Thomassen received a grant from the Arts and Letters Summer Internship program, which funds sophomores and juniors who take internships in the U.S. and abroad. “I definitely could not have been here without the grant,” says Thomassen.

After graduation, Thomassen will move to Seattle to work as a content manager for Amazon.

Thomassen, who also participated in the Arts and Letters Business Bootcamp program, has urgent advice for her fellow Notre Dame students: “Get into the Career Center as soon as possible. That’s what I did and now, here I am at a really fantastic internship.”
