“I felt like my background at Notre Dame could not have prepared me better,” says Constance Barker ’73, a commissioner for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C.
Barker says she values the thinking, analyzing, and work ethic skills she developed as a modern languages major in Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, which have helped her throughout her career path, from banking to law to government.
Prior to her appointment to the Commission in 2008, she was a partner at Capell and Howard, P.C. in Montgomery, Ala., where she counseled businesses and defended employment discrimination lawsuits.
“Life brings most of us challenges and surprises that we don’t expect,” Barker says. "And I think there’s something about a liberal arts education at Notre Dame that prepared me to be able to handle the challenges.”
