Symposium: "How to Respond to the Signs of the Times?"

-

Location: Room 1050, Jenkins Nanovic Halls

The Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS) invites you to attend the last of three symposia focused on Msgr. Dr. Tomáš Halík’s project “The Theological Hermeneutics of Contemporary History, Society and Culture.” Msgr. Halík, a Templeton Prize Laureate, is in residence this fall as a Director’s Fellow at the NDIAS, joining us from the Czech Republic where he serves as Professor of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Charles University (Prague).

This day-long study of issues and perspectives at work in Msgr. Halík’s project will incorporate a range of theological and disciplinary perspectives, spanning history, literature, philosophy, political science, and sociology, and build on two previous symposia that examined the nature of the “signs of the times” and how to interpret them. In this third symposium, participants are invited to consider how trends in contemporary theology and spirituality could aid Christians in their responding more fully and effectively to the call to respond to the “signs of the time,” as well as encountering the challenges of the coming postsecular age, and developing Christian identity in a multicultural world.

These symposia bring together scholars from numerous disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to discern the signs of the times by addressing the questions of where to find them, how to interpret them, and how best to respond to them. In this symposium, Msgr. Halík will address key foci in concert with University of Notre Dame and external faculty colleagues:

This symposium is open to all students, staff, faculty and members of the general public. For those wishing to participate who are unable to attend, this symposium will be live streamed on the NDIAS website.
