Majors, Supplementary Majors, and Minors

Choosing a Major

Generally, students in the College of Arts and Letters declare a major by the end of their sophomore year. Choice of major is a difficult decision for many students who are encountering diverse fields of study for the first time. The assistant deans in the Office of Undergraduate Studies, as well as departmental undergraduate advisors, are available to assist students as they decide on a major.

The assistant deans in the Office of Undergraduate Studies give the following advice to students struggling to choose a major:

  1. Choose a discipline you enjoy! Students perform better if their coursework interests them.
  2. Speak with Advisors from the Career Center to discover internship and career opportunities for students in your chosen major!
  3. Explore your major beyond its minimum requirements! Deepen your knowledge of the subject matter. Use your elective and University credits to broaden your education.
  4. Consider adding a supplementary major or minor to broaden your knowledge
  5. Change your major if you are not content with your initial decision! The assistant deans in the Office of Undergraduate Studies will assist you.
