Choosing Arts and Letters

First Year Students

First year students may explore the College of Arts and Letters by choosing courses in philosophy, theology, history, social science, fine arts, and literature during their first year. Such courses expose students to the variety of disciplines housed in the College and fulfill University requirements for graduation.

At the end of the first year of study, students in good standing may choose to enter the College of Arts and Letters. No applications to the College are necessary, as long as students have fulfilled the following requirements:

  • 1 semester of University Seminar
  • 1 semester of Composition
  • 2 semesters of Mathematics
  • 2 semesters of Science
  • 1 semester in History/Social Science, Philosophy, Theology, or Fine Arts
  • 2 semesters of Physical Education or ROTC

Students who are deficient in any of these requirements must complete them during Summer Session or during their third semester at the University before choosing to enter the College.

When classes are in session, the walls of O'Shaughnessy Hall are covered with posters advertising a variety of events.
