Honors Opportunities in the Arts and Sciences

The University of Notre Dame is well known for the excellence of its undergraduate education. As part of its commitment to student scholarship, the University offers a wide variety of honors opportunities, from research grants to study abroad and selective honors courses.

ND students from the arts, humanities, and sciences share their stories in this short video.

Among the students featured are:

  • Andrea Dreyfuss Rivas, who since graduating has been helping youth avoid gang involvement and substance abuse as a counselor with Youth Outreach Services in Chicago. She was recently accepted into medical school.
  • Grant W. Van Eaton, who after graduation completed a year-long research fellowship in Heidelberg, Germany, and is next embarking on a two-year commitment to teach high school biology in Washington, D.C., as part of the Teach For America program.
  • Joseph Piarulli, who is building a career in film in Los Angeles.
  • Heidi Hausse, who is now pursuing a Ph.D. in history at Princeton University.
  • Amy Reinthaler, who received a post-baccalaureate certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and is now studying for an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Andrea Laidman, who since graduating has been in Ireland pursuing a master’s degree in international development before she goes on to New York University School of Law.

The Glynn Family Honors Program

In every incoming class, a select group of 100 students is invited to join the Glynn Family Honors Program. Glynn Scholars (top two percent of high school class, 1,500–1,600 on the SAT) can pursue any major in the colleges of Arts and Letters or Science. Each who develops a thoughtful proposal is guaranteed at least one summer research fellowship, and all Glynn Scholars work with a faculty mentor to complete a senior thesis.

Honors Convocation at Graduation

Each May, faculty and students gather to celebrate the intellectual achievements of Arts and Letters students whose oustanding efforts have garnered them special recognition or awards. The Friday before each Commencement Weekend, the College of Arts and Letters honors those students graduating with national, university, and departmental honors, students being initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, and students receiving academic honors based on their cumulative GPAs.

The families of recognized students as well as departmental and college representatives are invited to attend the convocation.

Honors Tracks

More than 20 majors offered by the College have honors tracks. Students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior years based on their GPA in the major and faculty recommendations. Like Glynn Scholars, departmental honors students produce a senior thesis in close collaboration with a faculty member.
