Internships

DOWNLOAD DEPARTMENTAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Internships are a valuable way to enhance a résumé, however, academic credit will not be rewarded for experience alone. Credit will be rewarded based on the academic component inspired by the participation in the internship.

Applying for Arts and Letters Internship Credit

Students must be enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters. Prior approval is necessary from the Office of Undergraduate Studies to ensure proper credit transfer. All internships for credit must be unpaid.

To obtain credit for an internship:

  1. You must write a brief one page goals and objectives statement outlining the nature of the work you will be performing and what you expect to gain from this experience. List three specific goals and objectives for the internship and submit to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
  2. Submit an offer letter from a supervisor. The letter should outline both duties and the approximate dates and times of work. No credit will be granted unless an offer is submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
  3. Keep a daily journal of internship activities.
  4. Write a final essay (5-7 pages in length) reflecting on original goals and objectives. The essay should include the following:
    • Insights you gained from the experience.
    • Description of a significant project or the overall work experience and how it contributed to the company, industry or enterprise as well as to your personal development.
  5. Turn in final paper and journal:
    • By the last class day of the semester if the internship is taken during the academic year
    • During the first week of the fall semester if the internship is taken during the summer session.
  6. Have your supervisor send a letter of evaluation to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

Registration

If approval is granted, you must obtain an authorization number from the Office of Undergraduate Studies and register for the internship class. The class will be graded S/U and will be used for elective credit only.
