Declaring and/or Changing a Major

Declaring a Major

In order to declare a major, students should visit the Office of Undergraduate Studies during walk-in hours or schedule an appointment for a suitable time.

Procedure and Requirements

  1. The student must be in residence at the University. Students studying abroad will not be allowed to declare a major via mail, telephone, or electronic medium.
  2. Successful completion of the First Year of Studies (http://fys.nd.edu)
  3. Fulfillment of any prerequisites necessary for the major
  4. Careful consideration of the major choice

Changing a Major

The Office of Undergraduate Studies urges students to carefully consider the decision to change majors in order to save themselves the time and effort that may be required by such a change.

Students should meet with their current and prospective faculty advisors before initiating a change. Most departments will not allow the declaration of a new major during a student’s senior year.

Procedure and Requirements

  1. The student must be in residence at the University. Students studying abroad will not be allowed to change majors via mail, telephone, or electronic medium.
  2. Obtainment of the Student Academic Program Selection form from the Office of Undergraduate Studies or from a departmental office.
  3. Signature of student
  4. Signature of departmental chairperson or director of undergraduate advising
  5. Submission to the Office of Undergraduate Studies for approval
