Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies

Stuart Greene was appointed Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in 2005. He attended the State University of New York at Binghamton and received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon. An Associate Professor of English, he previously served as O'Malley Director of the University Writing Program. His research and teaching have focused on the relationship between writing and learning in higher education and the acquisition of literacy. Currently, his research examines the history of education, civil rights legislation, and minority opportunity in public schools.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Undergraduate Studies
    The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Office of Undergraduate Studies and all undergraduate degree programs, including those programs not directly housed in a department and those offered in affiliated centers, programs, and institutes. He provides general supervision of all majors, supplemental majors; interdisciplinary minors, and area studies minors and communicates with the directors of undergraduate studies (DUS) within the College of Arts and Letters. He also supervises transfer admissions into the College.
  • Teaching
    The Associate Dean works with the Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning to provide appropriate training for faculty and watches over the quality of teaching across departments.
  • Enrollment Management
    Associate Dean Greene supervises the enrollment of all Arts and Letters courses and oversees departmental contributions to the University Seminar and College Seminar. He also maintains enrollment statistics over time.
  • Student Development
    The Associate Dean coordinates with directors of programs and services housed outside Arts and Letters that serve students, such as study abroad programs, joint college programs, and residential life. He also oversees special Arts and Letters initiatives that foster student development.
  • Student Affairs
    The Associate Dean reviews student appeals and honesty cases and in difficult cases makes a recommendation to the Dean.
  • Undergraduate Research
    Associate Dean Greene oversees the Undergraduate Intellectual Initiative.
