I. A. O'Shaughnessy Dean John T. McGreevyJohn T. McGreevy

John T. McGreevy was named I.A. O'Shaughnessy Dean of the College of Arts and Letters in 2008. He attended the University of Notre Dame before receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University.

McGreevy is the author of two books: Catholicism and American Freedom: A History and Parish Boundaries: The Catholic Encounter with Race in the Twentieth Century Urban North. He has held major fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Erasmus Institute, and the Louisville Institute, and has published articles in The Journal of American History, American Quarterly, the Chicago Tribune, Pacific Historical Review, Religion and American Culture, and Commonweal.

Administrative Responsibilities

The Dean oversees both the academic core and the support structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In cooperation with faculty members and other administrators, he seeks to advance Arts and Letters while integrating the various aspects of Notre Dame's triadic identity as a residential liberal arts college, a dynamic research university, and a Catholic institution of international standing. Dean McGreevy oversees the University's programs in the Division of the Arts, the Division of the Humanities, and the Division of the Social Sciences; appoints and oversees four associate deans and the chairpersons of 21 departments as well as selected directors and support staff; and supports and evaluates the teaching and research of faculty members. His primary responsibilities include:

  • Overall vision and strategic planning
  • Tenure and promotion decisions
  • High-level appointments to faculty positions, including external recruitment to full professorships and endowed chairs
  • The appointment and review of department chairpersons
  • Fund raising and external representation and advocacy
  • Major budgeting responsibilities and priorities
  • Leadership development within the College and playing a broadly pastoral and community building role
  • Departmental reviews and evaluations.
