Associate Dean for Research, Graduate Studies, and Centers

Gretchen Reydams-Schils

Gretchen Reydams-Schils was appointed Associate Dean for Research, Graduate Studies, and Centers in 2006 after serving as the Director of the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts. She attended the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and holds a M.A. from the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.  Professor Reydams-Schils works in the area of Ancient Philosophy, with a focus on the traditions of Platonism and Stoicism.  She is a Professor in the Program of Liberal Studies and holds a concurrent appointment in Philosophy. Professor Reydams-Schils has been awarded a Humboldt Fellowship for the Spring-Summer of 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Research and Faculty Development
    Associate Dean Reydams-Schils oversees the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (ISLA). She interviews all candidates for faculty positions in the social sciences during their campus visits to discuss research interests and support and contacts all new faculty concerning their research space and funding support needs. She also allocates funds for one-time faculty grants, special initiatives and conferences, and approves postdoctoral and visiting scholar appointments.
  • Graduate Studies
    The Associate Dean supervises all graduate programs in the College of Arts and Letters, including those housed outside of departments. She reviews new graduate program proposals, budgets of current graduate programs, and requests for new funding of graduate programs. She also analyzes annual reports regarding graduate student funding, participates in meetings with the Graduate School and the Office of Research, conducts regular meetings with directors of graduate studies (DGS) in the College, and oversees the College's Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship Program.
  • Centers
    The Associate Dean oversees interdisciplinary centers and programs within the College, excluding undergraduate interdisciplinary minors.
