Medieval Institute to host international meeting of scholars

The University of Notre Dame's Medieval Institute will host an international gathering of medieval scholars to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (SIEPM) Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 in McKenna Hall.

Participants in the meeting, which is also the 15th colloquium of the international society, will discuss "Philosophy and Theology in the Studia of the Religious Orders and at the Papal Court."

According to one of the meeting's organizers, Kent Emery, Jr., professor in Notre Dame's Program of Liberal Studies and the Medieval Institute, the discussion "will focus on the particularities of the teaching of philosophy and theology in the studia (or study houses) of the mendicant and monastic religious orders and at the theological schools at the Papal Court as distinct from instruction in the faculties of the university proper."

Immediately following the conference, which is sponsored by the Medieval Institute with support from Notre Dame's philosophy department and Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, the board of SIEPM will hold its annual business meeting.

The conference schedule is available on the conference web at http://www.nd.edu/~medinst/lectures/SIEPMProgram.html.
