"I think that the first thing that Notre Dame provided me was a real education. You know, a really broad education. I was a music minor. I was an art major. I was a writer. I was a painter.

"So I think that the breadth of that experience stood me in good stead so that by the time that I came into the movie business—which was like two months after I got out of college. When I got into the movie business it was pretty much dominated by people who were movie business people. It wasn’t a place where you went from college. It wasn’t a place where you made films about young people for example. It’s hard to imagine, but when I got into the movie business, the only movies about people like me, that’s a twenty-one year-old college graduate, were like beach party music bingos, like Annette Funicello movies. That was it.

"There were no realistic movies whatsoever, and so it was a special time in the film business. And so I kind of brought with me a package of experience that wasn’t normal for the movie business, and now it’s different - a different world. So Notre Dame, my Notre Dame education, was, I think, very important to me because I wasn’t like anybody else."
