Interview Highlights

Describe your major in the "Great Books."
It is, in my opinion, one of the best educations you can get. It exposes … people to the thoughts that have been central to building ideas and societies in the world. … You also [get] a general idea of how people think.

Has this focus on critical thinking helped you professionally?

In my current position as president of the National Federation of the Blind, I am trying … to get a society to take blind people seriously. The background of this kind of knowledge is most useful to this because I know what kinds of arguments have been made, and I know in many cases how to meet them with thoughts that other great minds have had. …

Would you recommend the "Great Books" to today’s students?
It is one of the most helpful ways of approaching how to change the world for the better than I know of ... Anybody who is thinking that there is something important to do to change the nature of a society, it seems to me, should try to get this kind of an education.
