"As each of my six children have headed off to college, I share with them a beautiful essay from Ralph Waldo Emerson titled, “Success.” I won’t attempt to do the entire essay for you at this moment, but the important ingredients in that essay titled “Success” are to make a difference.
"To win the affection of children, and endure the betrayal of false friends, to earn the approbation of honest critics, to leave the world a bit better whether by healthy child, garden patch, redeemed social condition, to have laughed and played with enthusiasm and sung with exultation.
"But the piece in the last line of the essay, that is most moving, that I take from this University, I give to my kids, and I have on a parchment paper in my office, that is in script that I know I’ve given ten thousand of these out over the last twenty years—and I mean that—the last line says, 'To know that lives I’ve touched have breathed easier because I have lived, that is to have succeeded.' And so I share that with my children, and I try to live by that and ask them to do the same as they search for their place in the world."
