Lecture: "The Neue Freie Presse Neurosis: Freud, Karl Kraus, and the Newspaper as Daily Devotional"

March 12, 2008 ( 04:00PM - 05:30PM )

  • Sponsor(s): Department of German Language and Literature, Nanovic Institute for European Studies
  • Location: 220 Malloy Hall

In his lecture, Leo Lensing, Professor of German and Film Studies at Wesleyan University, will explore the intransigent position that led Freud to underestimate the lessons of Kraus' devastating critique of the mass-circulation press and to suppress its implications for a psychoanalytically informed cultural criticism.  As early as 1899, when The Torch was founded, Kraus began to demythologize the intellectual pretensions and cultural influence of the Neue Freie Press, the Viennese daily that was arguably the most important journalistic organ in Central Europe.

Free and open to the public.
